Port Canaveral cruise day: how to time the ride
The ship leaves on time whether you are on it or not. A practical way to plan the drive to Port Canaveral, and back again a week later.
- Child seats, meet and greet, tolls and airport fees are in the price
Start from your arrival window
Cruise lines give each passenger an arrival window or appointment when they check in online. That window, not the departure time, is what to plan around. One guide puts a typical window between about 9:45 am and 1:30 pm, but it varies by line and ship.
The terminals are at their most crowded from about half past ten until half past twelve. An earlier slot usually means a shorter line.

Add the drive, then a margin
From Orlando International, the port is about 44 to 46 miles, nearly all on SR 528, the Beachline. Allow 45 to 60 minutes in normal traffic. From the theme park resort area it is about 60 to 65 miles, a little over an hour. On top of that, add a margin for traffic and for unloading at the terminal.

Weekends are the crunch
Saturdays are the port’s busiest days, followed by Sundays, often with four or five ships in at once. On those mornings, passengers coming off ships head for the airport while new passengers head for the port, all on the same roads.
Flying in the same day?
It can work with an early flight and no connections, but a delayed flight on cruise day can mean a missed ship. Many cruisers fly in the day before and stay in Orlando or near the coast; Cocoa Beach is just south of the port.
At the terminal curb
Vehicles drop off at the front of the terminal in marked lanes. Porters take checked bags at the curb, so keep passports, travel documents and any medication in your carry-on before the suitcases go.

Debarkation morning
Ships usually come back early in the morning, and each line lets passengers off in stages. If you are flying home the same day, leave room for getting off the ship, customs and collecting your bags, then about 45 to 60 minutes to MCO in normal traffic. An afternoon flight is far less stressful than a late-morning one.
